J-1 Work & Travel Program for Ireland
The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh is pleased to offer the Work & Travel Program for Ireland.
Come Intern anywhere in the US – please consider Pittsburgh!
The program is open to Irish Citizens only, who are either:
– Students currently enrolled in and actively pursuing a degree (or qualification that can lead to a degree, from an accredited post-secondary institution,
or
– Students that graduated no more than 12 months prior to date of intended arrival in the US
This Visa is similar to the J1 Intern Visa – with one notable difference – students do not have to have an Internship pre-arranged before arrival in the US.
Students are eligible to engage in a paid internship, in their field of study, for one year.
The IIP will provide basic assistance students interested in gaining an internship in the Greater Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania regions.
Internship: The primary component of the Exchange Visitor Program will be a paid internship in the student’s degree-related industry. Participating students will undertake a one year internship experience securing a position with a high-performance, successful US business or organization. Under the guidance of a mentor in the workplace, participants will gain valuable, hands-on experience and a new understanding for their field of interest. Each participant’s respective employer will determine the rate of compensation. A training plan will be created (with IIP assistance) once the student has arranged their internship. This plan will serve as a blueprint for the internship and will show a progression through the organization.
The IIP is approved for the following 5 categories of J1 Work Travel Pilot Program for Ireland:
Arts & Culture
- Education, Social Sciences, Library Science, Counseling and Social Services
- Hospitality & Tourism
- Management, Business, Commerce, and Finance
- The Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics and Industrial Occupations
Participants don’t have to come to Pittsburgh, but if they do – the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh will provide basic assistance to participants in accessing internships and housing, as well as providing other social and support services to them.
