Wider Horizons 2009 - Current Program

Tyrone and Donegal

Our Youth and Community group from Tyrone and Donegal arrived in Pittsburgh on Monday the 22nd of June. They were welcomed by their host families and IIP staff and brought back to their new homes. The first week included a range of activities including Orientation, a Downtown scavenger hunt, and meetings with Duquesne staff and internship mentors.

While the majority of the young people are working in YMCA's in various locations around the Pittsburgh area, other placements include the Jewish Community Centre of South Hills, and Gwen's Girls - an organization that strives to ensure that girls ranging from the ages of 8 to 16 prosper through a range of gender-specific educational and holistic experiences.

The social activities this year promise to be exciting, with a trip to Niagara Falls, Sandcastle, Kennywood and, of course, Washington DC.

The group are due to leave on Sunday the August 16th and a graduation will be held for them on Thursday the August 13th in the Power Center at Duquesne University, followed by dinner at The LeMont, on Mount Washington.

The third group from Monaghan and Portadown are due to arrive around Labour Day.
